What an amazing night of action here in SSW was the celebration of our 12th Anniversary event on Sunday, May 24th! New Champions, new challengers, and a "New Regime"? All that, and of course an historic match between Colt Cabana and Vic Capri...only in SSW!
The show began with the non-title Tag Team match, where Jeff Luxon took on Daryck St. Holmes and GPA by himself, after Ryan Kross was unable to appear. Shortly into the handicap match, Melanie Cruise came to Jeff's aid, evening the odds. Unfortunately, Jeff and Melanie were defeated by "The Wrestling Standard", and once again GPA and St. Holmes left with the titles, although not officially the champs.
The second match of the night took place between Dave Rydell and Remy Rainz, after Rydell appeared to be parting ways with Devin Diamond and Pauly Thomaselli. Remy then came to the ring and challenged Rydell to match. These two have been mainstays here in SSW for nearly a decade, and the two wrestled a classic match. But, Devin then helped Rydell gain the victory over one of the most successful SSW wrestlers to date, solidifying him as a legit contender to the SSW title in the months to come. After the match, Rudo Cortez, former SSW Champion and tag champion, came to the aid of his friend, and chased off Rydell and Devin.
The next contest was the "Sibling Rivalry" match between "Shogun" Chris Logan and Shane Fury. This was one of the hardest hitting match of the night, in a manner only two brothers could have. But, in the end, Shane Fury pulled out the arguable upset victory, after Marcello Spade got involved in the match, and allowing Fury to get the pinfall over his brother.
It was then time for the Lightning Division Championship "Whirlwind" Match, where Melanie Cruise defended her title against Nick Cutler, Backwoods Brown, Matt Dewar, Marcello Spade, and The ShadowCaster. Unfortunately, Melanie's leg injury came into play, leading to Matt Dewar pulling out the win to become a two-time SSW Lightning Division Champion. Albeit, after he essentially stole the win after Melanie put down ShadowCaster with her press-slam! After the match, Melanie Cruise was visibly frustrated at how the night played out for her, understandingly so, after losing her title and losing her tag match earlier in the night. But, it was a great night for Matt Dewar, your two-time SSW Lightning Division Champion!
SSW owner RJ Daniels then came out to thank the crowd for their years of support, and to give "The Mouth of the Midwest" Jason Parks his "Hall of Honor" award for 2015. But, Devin Diamond and Pauly Thomaselli interrupted. When it appeared the two were going to attack JP, Marshe Rockett came to the ring, chasing off Pauly, and JP decked Devin, and then Marshe hit him with the M80. JP then announced the RJ had made him the special guest referee for Pauly's match with Marshe later in the night!
It was then time for the much anticipated "BullRope Match" between Ruff Crossing and Yabo the Clown! Again, another hard fought, and specifically unconventional match, that saw many unique moves as the two competitors utilized the bullrope as an offensive weapon, as well as mean of defense! In the end, and much to the crowd's pleasure, Yabo pulled out the win (literally) when he was able to hit all four corners in succession, albeit hitting the fourth with the help of his "elastic hand", and thus winning the match. Ruff was apoplectic after the match, arguing with the referee that was a fair win, but the referee held strong on his call, and made Yabo the official winner of the match!
The following contest was the "Mid-West Dream Match" between Colt Cabana and Vic Capri, and it did not disappoint. It was an epic match only possible of the caliber of talent these two competitors possess! Of course, Colt made it a point to use his unorthodox tactics in a successful effort to throw Vic's very traditional and technical style out the window. The plan paid off for Colt, who was able to gain the pinfall victory over Vic, and win the match! Afterwards, Colt and Vic shook hands in sportsmanship, only to have Shane Fury and Marcello Spade attack them. Chris Logan then came to the ring and helped chase off the two. Vic and Logan then challenged Fury and Spade to a match when we return in the fall, and the three proceeded to celebrate Colt's win in the ring!
It was then Main Event time, where Pauly Thomselli would defend his SSW Championship against Marshe Rockett in the "Final Battle" between these two, after nearly two years of on and off battles with each other here in SSW. Arguably, these two put on one of the greatest SSW title matches to date, and the crowd could not have been hotter and more behind Marshe for the win. To that effect, Marshe did not disappoint, as he defeated Pauly with a M80 from the top rope, followed by the pinfall for the win, and crowning Marshe once again the SSW Champion! After the match, Dave Rydell appeared on the stage, and told Marshe he would have 3 months to enjoy his new title, as he was "cashing in" his Lords of the Ring championship contract when we return in the fall!
So, after seven great matches, two new champions, and our 12th year in the history books, we look forward to our return in the fall as we enter into our 13th season of events, and we couldn't be more excited for that time to come! We thank you all for your support, and look forward to seeing you in the fall!
