HISTORY OF THE LORDS OF THE RING TOURNAMENT
The annual SSW "Lords of the Ring" tournament is quickly becoming one of the most recognizable and prestigious professional wrestling tournaments in the mid-west region, and brings together some of the top talent in the region to compete for the honor of being crowned the "Lord of the Ring". The tournament was started by SSW back in 2008, when it was won by "The Acumen" Austin Roberts. A truncated version of the tournament returned in 2012, which was won by Ruff Crossing.
In 2013, the tournament was extended to 4 rounds: A Qualifying Round would seed the competitors, followed by a Quarter-Final round, Semi-Final round, and Final round. It was also added that the winner of the tournament would earn a guaranteed SSW Championship title shot, with the stipulation that the defending champion must agree to the match. The 2013 tournament was won by Pauly Thomaselli, whom "cashed in" his championship contract on August 31st, 2014, and defeated Vic Capri for the SSW Championship.
In 2014, the tournament was broken in 4 brackets, each consisting of the Qualifying and Quarter-Final rounds, and would be decided over the course of events during the year. The winners of the 4 brackets would then be seeded into the "final four" in the Semi-Final Round. Also, the Championship title shot that would be awarded to the winner of the tournament had the stipulation of "the defending champion must agree to the match" removed, and was changed to be "the match will take place at the time of the challenger's choosing". This stipulation is now similar to "Money in the Bank". The change was made due to Pauly Thomaselli being unable to get his title match for 8 months, due to Justice Jones unwilling to agree to defend his title against him. The "champion must agree" stipulation was written in by former Commissioner Devin Diamond, who was later learned to be aligned with Jones, and had manipulated the tournament to protect his client. SSW Owner RJ Daniels removed the "champion must agree" stipulation for the integrity of the 2014 tournament, and it's winner. The 2014 tournament was then won by Dave Rydell, whom "cashed in" his championship contract on September 6th, 2015, against Marshe Rockett and Pauly Thomaselli, but failed to obtain the title in that match.
The 2015 tournament was the first year that seemed to go off without any major controversy, and was run in similar style to the 2013 tournament. Over the course of the year, qualifying matches were held to determine the 8 who would compete in the tournament. Those 8 battled on November 29th, where the final four were determined to be Ruff Crossing, Shogun Chris Logan, Icepick Vic Capri, and Greeko "GQ" Suave. Vic Capri would go on to win the tournament on December 27th at the year end "Lords of the Ring" event. He has yet to "cash in" his title shot.
